Pandavirtualization: Exploiting the Xen hypervisor

On 2017-03-14, I reported a bug to Xen’s security team that permits an attacker with control over the kernel of a paravirtualized x86-64 Xen guest to break out of the hypervisor and gain full control over the machine’s physical memory. The Xen Project publicly released an advisory and a patch for this issue 2017-04-04. To demonstrate the impact of the issue, I created an exploit that, when executed in one 64-bit PV guest with root privileges, will execute a shell command as root in all other 64-bit PV guests (including dom0) on the same physical machine.[…]

[…]In this two-part blog series, we’ll explore the exposed attack surface introduced by Broadcom’s Wi-Fi SoC on mobile devices. Specifically, we’ll focus our attention on devices running Android, although a vast amount of this research applies to other systems including the same Wi-Fi SoCs. The first blog post will focus on exploring the Wi-Fi SoC itself; we’ll discover and exploit vulnerabilities which will allow us to remotely gain code execution on the chip. In the second blog post, we’ll further elevate our privileges from the SoC into the the operating system’s kernel. Chaining the two together, we’ll demonstrate full device takeover by Wi-Fi proximity alone, requiring no user interaction. We’ll focus on Broadcom’s Wi-Fi SoCs since they are the most common Wi-Fi chipset used on mobile devices. A partial list of devices which make use of this platform includes the Nexus 5, 6 and 6P, most Samsung flagship devices, and all iPhones since the iPhone 4. For the purpose of this blog post, we’ll demonstrate a Wi-Fi remote code execution exploit on a fully updated (at the time, now fixed) Nexus 6P, running Android 7.1.1 version NUF26K. All the vulnerabilities in the post have been disclosed to Broadcom. Currently KASLR is enabled on three regions: the direct mapping of physical memory, vamlloc and vmemmap. However the EFI region is also mistakenly included for VA space randomization because of misusing EFI_VA_START macro and assuming EFI_VA_START < EFI_VA_END. (This breaks kexec and possibly other things that rely on stable addresses.) The EFI region is reserved for EFI runtime services virtual mapping which should not be included in KASLR ranges. In Documentation/x86/x86_64/mm.txt, we can see:
ffffffef00000000 – fffffffeffffffff (=64 GB) EFI region mapping space
EFI uses the space from -4G to -64G thus EFI_VA_START > EFI_VA_END, Here EFI_VA_START = -4G, and EFI_VA_END = -64G. Changing EFI_VA_START to EFI_VA_END in mm/kaslr.c fixes this problem.

David Howells of Red Hat has posted a 24-part patch to the Linux-(Kernel,EFI) lists, which hardens Linux from some firmware attacks.
These patches provide a facility by which a variety of avenues by which userspace can feasibly modify the running kernel image can be locked down. These include:
(*) No unsigned modules and no modules for which can’t validate the signature.
(*) No use of ioperm(), iopl() and no writing to /dev/port.
(*) No writing to /dev/mem or /dev/kmem.
(*) No hibernation.
(*) Restrict PCI BAR access.
(*) Restrict MSR access.
(*) No kexec_load().
(*) Certain ACPI restrictions.
(*) Restrict debugfs interface to ASUS WMI.
The lock-down can be configured to be triggered by the EFI secure boot status, provided the shim isn’t insecure. The lock-down can be lifted by typing SysRq+x on a keyboard attached to the system.[…]

Keyshuffling Attack for Persistent Early Code Execution in the Nintendo 3DS Secure Bootchain
We demonstrate an attack on the secure bootchain of the Nintendo 3DS in order to gain early code execution. The attack utilizes the block shuffling vulnerability of the ECB cipher mode to rearrange keys in the Nintendo 3DS’s encrypted keystore. Because the shuffled keys will deterministically decrypt the encrypted firmware binary to incorrect plaintext data and execute it, and because the device’s memory contents are kept between hard reboots, it is possible to reliably reach a branching instruction to a payload in memory. This payload, due to its execution by a privileged processor and its early execution, is able to extract the hash of hardware secrets necessary to decrypt the device’s encrypted keystore and set up a persistent exploit of the system.[…]
